White Water Rafting on the Zambezi

Batoka Gorge, below Victoria Falls (operators on both Zimbabwe and Zambia sides)
DurationFull day (early start, return early–mid afternoon)

About the Adventure

The Zambezi below Victoria Falls is regularly ranked among the best one-day white-water rafting runs on earth — a string of big-volume Grade IV and V rapids with names like "Stairway to Heaven," "Gnashing Jaws of Death" and "Oblivion," set deep in the dramatic Batoka Gorge. It is genuinely world-class, and genuinely demanding. The day begins with a safety briefing and gear, then a steep ~250-metre descent into the gorge. You raft through the rapids — broken up with calmer stretches — before a hearty lunch and the climb back out. No experience is needed, but a reasonable level of fitness and a head for adventure are.

Best time: Low-water season (August–late December) for the legendary full run; high-water season (May–July, January–March) for a shorter, gentler trip
Category: Adrenaline / water

Good to Know

  • Season shapes the experience: In low water (Aug–late Dec), rapids 1–19 run — the highest-thrill version, with early pick-up around 7:00–7:30am and return by ~2:30pm. In high water (May–Jul, Jan–Mar), only rapids 11–23 are safe, making for a shorter, less intense day. The river typically closes around March when it becomes unsafe and reopens around June.
  • Raft types: Oar boats are steered by a guide (you hold on through the rapids); paddle boats are powered by the team and need more effort and coordination.
  • Safety: Life jackets and helmets are supplied, with safety kayakers accompanying the run. Operators run on both the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides.
  • What to wear: Swimwear, T-shirt, cap and secure footwear. Leave valuables and personal cameras behind — operators sell photo/video packages.
  • Fitness: The gorge descent and ascent are steep; this is not recommended for those with significant mobility or heart concerns.

Batoka Gorge Rapids Log

The Zambezi River gorge below Victoria Falls hosts some of the wildest Class V commercial whitewater rapids on earth. Here are the key rapids you will negotiate:

#4 Morning GloryClass V

A massive, rolling wave train that requires precise diagonal entry.

#5 Stairway to HeavenClass V

One of the largest runnable drops on earth — a 10-foot vertical plunge.

#7 Gulliver's TravelsClass V

A long, highly technical rapid with rocks and massive holes. Crucial route.

#18 OblivionClass V

Famous for its massive standing wave that flips more rafts than any other.

Physical Requirement Warning

Rafting requires a steep hike in and out of the Batoka Gorge (approx. 200m vertical descent/climb on rustic paths). A reasonable level of physical fitness is required.
