Put Your Bag Down at The Shrub Lodge

A family-run lodge on a quiet street in Victoria Falls: en-suite rooms, a pool, and a proper place to land after the falls.

Victoria Falls is brilliant, and it is also a lot. Spray in your hair, a bridge full of people, and someone at lunch already planning what you should do next. The Shrub Lodge is the part of the day where all of that can stop.

It is a family-run, three-star lodge on a quiet suburban street, 649 Rynard Road, rather than a camp with a view of the river. You sleep here, you go out to the waterfall and to whatever else you have planned in town, and you come back to a real bed. That is the whole idea, and it is a good one.

What you are actually booking

Rooms are en suite. The ones they publish are a single, a double and a twin, with air-conditioning and a look out to the garden instead of a car park. There is a ceiling fan, a desk for the email you still have to send, satellite television, Wi-Fi, and a safe. One of the rooms opens through a doorway into the next, which is handy if you are travelling with a friend and would like your own bed without being sent down the corridor.

They are clean, light, and finished properly. Wooden headboards, white linen, nothing trying too hard. You will sleep. After a day on your feet at the falls, that is the job.

Pool, dinner, and the bit after the falls

There is a swimming pool for the afternoon your legs have had enough of the rainforest. Laundry, if the spray has soaked everything you own. A restaurant, so dinner does not have to be a mission into town, and room service for the night you would rather eat in your socks. Nobody is handing you a sundowner on a game deck at five. Somebody can, however, point you at the pool.

The front desk is listed from 8:00 in the morning until 10:00 at night. Check-in is from 2:00 pm. The same reservations desk can line up Victoria Falls tours and time on the river, which is useful, because the best version of this stay is the one where you sleep here and let the day happen somewhere else.

One small mix-up worth avoiding: Kamtengo Guest House shares that reservations desk, and it is a different place, a self-catering house, not a room at The Shrub. If you want the lodge, say the lodge.

Who it suits

Couples, friends, and anyone travelling on their own who wants a straightforward base in Victoria Falls. If your picture of a good stay is a deck over a waterhole, this is not that, and we will not dress it up as one. If your picture is a quiet street, a comfortable room, and the falls as something you go out to, it is an easy yes.

What a night costs

On the lodge's own site, a single is listed at USD 150 a night, and a double or a twin at USD 200. That is per room, not per person. Treat it as the published starting point. Seasons change, and so does what is actually free. We check the dates you want before anyone commits.

Tell us your dates

Write to hello@verdantiafrica.com with when you are coming, how many of you, and whether you want a single, a double or a twin. Or use the contact page and say the same thing. We will confirm the room. If you also want the rainforest, a sunset cruise, or dinner shaped around the stay, say that too. That is the fun bit.
